We love talking about alloy and mag wheels because they’re the stylish bit that everyone notices. Let’s face it, no one has ever described a Pirelli tyre as a work of art.

However, we do need to talk about tyres because (obviously) they hold a pretty important function on your car! You’ve probably got an image in your head of what you want your rims to look like but have you thought about how your tyres might affect the performance of your car. Or have you thought further still about the combination of wheel and tyre and what that might mean for performance.

Tyres for long distances

If you spend a lot of time behind the wheel, you’ll want to consider comfort when selecting your tyres. Low profile tyres look great and perform well at speed but if you’re going long haul on a regular basis, low profile tyres don’t have much give and you may feel like your spinal column has compressed after a couple of hours behind the wheel. Naturally, there are other things that contribute to a softer ride such as suspension and seats but tyres are still something to consider.

Tyres for 4x4s

Generally with 4x4 tyres, bigger is better. Bigger in diameter and bigger tread. But that’s only if you plan on taking it through the rough stuff on a regular basis. If you only use your 4x4 to get around town then big knobbley tyres may not be the answer. The reason being, all that tread on normal tarmac actually causes more resistance than regular tyres which means that it won’t do your fuel consumption any favours – a factor that’s likely to be important to you if you use your 4x4 for business as well as pleasure.

Race tyres

If you think of yourself as the next Mark Webber, then you might be looking for a tyre with a bit more performance. We should point out at this point that there are race tyres and race tyres. The latter aren’t necessarily road legal so bare than in mind if you’re looking for performance on your day-to-day run around. In the race category, we can offer low profile and semi slick tyres for the right kind of grip in the corners and less resistance in a straight line.

If you’re into drag racing you may also want to consider front runner tyres. These are not essential if you’re drag racing but some say you get less drag and better steering when you use front runners in combination with slick, fat rear tyres.

Even if you’re just kitting out a road car, you may want to consider staggered wheels to get a better performance out of rear wheel drive cars. It’s not advised for front or all-wheel drive cars though.

Bus and truck tyres

Ask us about bus and truck tyres. Naturally these aren’t exactly standard but our specialist knowledge of all things tyre mean we can find something to suit your bus or truck.

Load rating

Load rating is a very important consideration particularly on utes, 4x4 and estate vehicles which are likely to be heavily laden or towing something on the back.

Make sure they tyres you choose can bare the load you need to carry on a day-to-day basis. There are charts available online to help you choose or you can ask our helpful staff.
